HAYDENSHAPES AND DION CREATE CONTEMPORARY WETSUIT COLLECTION RE-IMAGINING FORM, MATERIAL AND CONSTRUCTION.
Featuring non petroleum based Yamamoto limestone rubber and innovative construction techniques never before seen applied to a wetsuit, this creative endeavour between two globally celebrated designers challenges typical surf and fashion codes fusing
architectural tailoring with performance wetsuit engineering.
Sharing a common interest and intrigue for wetsuit design, together Haydenshapes and Dion Lee have explored mix-materiality, textile engineering and cutting-edge visual concepts with purpose.
“Our approach in launching wetsuits wasn’t to adopt the current format and apply our
logos. I feel like our audience appreciates the unique lens we bring to what we do and
detail we like to go to with construction and material. Working with a designer like Dion
Lee who is one of the most innovative minds in architectural fashion tailoring and who
also has a deep history and understanding of working with neoprene, is a true
contribution to the wetsuit space. That’s something I always try to achieve when it comes to collaboration, honouring our core surf brand DNA whilst at the same time presenting a new idea and approach on how performance surf products can be designed and made.”
- Hayden Cox
The collection marries innovative construction and a consciousness of the human form, while fundamentally focusing on movement and motion in the surf. Designed with a multifunctional
approach, the collection features full-piece suits, a jacket and a range of modular ‘hybrid wetsuit
/ ready-to-wear / swim’ styles including a top, pant and bolero, which can be worn together or
deconstructed into individual pieces.
“My design language stems from a technical ideation, and I’ve always been drawn to
neoprene and wetsuitting as a materiality in my collections. Working with Hayden to
introduce a design-focused, performance-driven, elevated product is incredibly exciting.”
- Dion Lee
Diverse and inclusive, the collection was designed to appeal to a broader contemporary surf
audience. Ranging from more simplistic wetsuit concepts to the more technically designed and constructed pieces, the collection has been tested and endorsed by Haydenshapes team of underground culture shaping surfers like Dion Agius, Jake Kelley and Frankie Harrer.
The product offering reinterprets Lee’s signature design concepts in an explorative adaptation in limestone rubber and wetsuit construction. Lee’s iconic "braided spine” detail is engineered by manipulating neoprene to create gill-like features in the ‘Aqualung’ pieces. Integrated corsetry, featured in the womens’ pieces, adapts Lee’s signature corsetry construction of boning and shaping, allowing for performance and manoeuvrability when submerged in water.
The ‘Haydenshapes Rubber by Dion Lee’ collection will be available in July 2023 via SSENSE, Dion Lee stores worldwide, dionlee.com as well as Haydenshapes.com.
