CENTSITIVE OBJECTS BY HAYDEN COX. A DESIGN AND MANUFACTURING COMMISION FOR WESTPAC.

Hayden Cox has been tapped by Westpac, Australia’s leading financial institution, to develop Centsitive Objects — a collection of wearable tap-and-go payment method accessories.

Hayden Cox was enlisted by Westpac, Australia’s leading financial institution to apply unique design and style sensibilities in developing a new category of accessories, decoding a consumerfriendly lifestyle proposition to create a seamless end-to-end user experience in the form of PayWear.

The brief: to diversify and expand Westpac’s PayWear offering and deliver a relevant, multi-purpose product that supports the Australian way of life.

Having pioneered PayWear in 2017 with their Essentials Range encompassing a silicon ‘Keeper’ watch-band attachment and silicone wristband, Westpac was well positioned and eager to evolve the category, creating and fostering a new consumer behaviour.

“It was important for us to appoint an Australian designer who resonated with everyday Australian’s.” says Westpac Chief Executive Officer, Brian Hartzer.

The pairing, one of Australia’s leading banks working in unison with a world-renowned design category innovator, is a world first.

“We began with a conversation around how people are interacting with money. The purpose of the range revolves around simplicity, convenience, multi-use and blending function with design that people would actually want to wear.” says designer Hayden Cox.

By first dissecting the brief, Cox identified a number of tangible, everyday objects that could double as payment transaction accessories.

“I began listing some potential concerns that both myself and everyday Australians might have about PayWear from security to look-and-feel, ease of use etc. I also made a list of potential ‘wants and needs’ that people would benefit from a category like this and how to blend the accessories seamlessly into different lifestyles and daily routines without requiring too much thought. It had to be simple. From there, I began to shape the range and create pieces that spoke to different wants, needs and preference. Aesthetically I opted for clean-line, modern and versatile.” says Cox.

The end result: Centsitive Objects

Centsitive Objects is a five-piece collection of minimalist objects purpose-built with a sensitivity for tap-and-pay by insert capabilities of a 1.5cm x 2.5cm Westpac PayWear Card (FDR chip), transforming the wearable object into payment on the go.

Five accessories make up the Centsitive Objects range — a convertible and waterproof two-in-one Keychain + Wristband, a Slim-Line Keeper to add to your watch or fitness band, an ultra-minimal Incognito Pin set that includes four unique toppers, an 80’s inspired Nostalgia Pin, and an invisible and internal-facing iron on Centsitive Patch available in sets of three — as detailed below.

Centsitive Objects

1. Wristband and keychain; made from Econyl (recycled nylon-spandex fabric made from discarded fishing nets and ocean plastics) the multi-functional strap uses stainless steel hardware, is waterproof and comes in neutral tones mineral, stone and black.

2. Slim-line keeper; minimalist in its design the silicon keeper affixes to any watch-strap or exercise band and is coloured in the collections neutral palette.

3. Nostalgia pin; the iconic safety pin design is immediately identifiable amongst youth culture. The

precious metal pin can be attached to any fabric and worn discreetly.

4. Incognito pin; a subtle, ultra-minimalist, plastic dome or lightening bolt — another symbol of youth culture — screw function pin that sits on the inside of the wearers fabric and available in mineral, stone or black.

5. Nostalgia pin ; the iconic safety pin design is immediately identifiable amongst youth culture. The precious metal pin can be attached to any fabric and worn discreetly.

6. Centsitive iron-on patch; this temporary use patch is fashioned from screen printed cotton and worn internally. The patch can adhere to multiple fabrics including denim or leather and is available black orwhite.

“These accessories sit independently of other devices such as a smart phone — there’s no user interface and they’re not battery operated. Essentially, it’s the progression of reaching for your debit card to tap-and- pay for something. I wanted to make them accessible and useful to the broader market of Australian’s.” says Hayden Cox

Priced for all Australian’s to enjoy, these desirable tap-and- go payment objects will be available in branch at Westpac locations Australia-wide from August, 2018 for an exclusive period only.
